What is Boudoir Photography?

Boudoir photography is absolutely intimate portraiture, but that definition doesn’t really explain why women choose to do it.

Yes, the photographs can be sexy.

They can also be soft, elegant, bold, playful, vulnerable or somewhere in between.

And no, you don’t need to walk into a studio already feeling confident, know how to pose or even know exactly what you want.

That’s where a good boudoir photographer comes in.

For me, boudoir photography is about creating photographs of a woman that still look and feel like her, while taking care of the lighting, posing, expression and all the little details with a skill she should never have to worry about.

More Than Beautiful Photographs

Beyond the aesthetic appeal, boudoir photography most importantly serves as a powerful tool for self-discovery and empowerment.

By stepping outside their comfort zones and engaging in this intimate form of portraiture, women can reconnect with their inner confidence and celebrate their bodies in a way that is both liberating and transformative.

The experience of a boudoir session can be a life-changing one, as it helps women embrace their unique beauty and feel more comfortable in their own skin.

And that experience looks different for every woman.

Some women book a boudoir session to celebrate a milestone. A birthday. A wedding. An anniversary. A personal transformation.

Others have spent years putting everyone else first and finally decide they want to do something entirely for themselves.

And sometimes there doesn’t need to be an occasion at all.

Wanting to see yourself differently—or simply wanting beautiful photographs of yourself—is reason enough.

What Happens During a Boudoir Photography Session?

One of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography is that you need to walk into the studio already knowing what you’re doing.

You absolutely do not.

A professionally photographed boudoir session should be guided from beginning to end.

At Nicole Fey Photography, your experience begins before you ever step in front of my camera. We talk about what you envision for your photographs, the things you love, the things you may feel uncertain about, and what you want from the experience.

Professional hair and makeup allows you time to relax and settle into the day before we begin photographing.

From there, I guide you throughout your session.

The lighting, posing, expression, wardrobe and details are all part of creating photographs that are flattering, natural and unmistakably you.

You aren’t expected to perform for my camera.

You simply get to experience being photographed.

Do I Need to Know How to Pose for Boudoir Photos?

Not at all.

In fact, almost every woman who walks into my Colorado Springs boudoir studio tells me some version of the same thing:

“I don’t know how to pose.”

That’s perfectly fine.

That’s my job.

Posing is about far more than telling someone where to stand or how to place her hands. Small adjustments in posture, angles, expression and movement can completely change a photograph.

Every woman’s body is different, which means posing shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all formula.

Throughout your session, I guide you through each pose and make adjustments specifically for you.

You don’t need modeling experience.

You don’t need to practice beforehand.

And you certainly don’t need to know what to do with your hands.

I’ll take care of that.

What Should You Wear for Boudoir Photography?

When women picture boudoir photography, lingerie is usually the first thing that comes to mind.

And yes, beautiful lingerie photographs wonderfully.

But it is far from your only option.

From delicate lingerie and bodysuits to oversized sweaters, button-down shirts, bridal pieces, stockings and tastefully draped fabrics, wardrobe can be as revealing—or as understated—as you want it to be.

Sometimes the simplest pieces create the most beautiful photographs.

What matters most is choosing something that allows you to feel comfortable, beautiful and connected to the woman you see in the mirror.

Your wardrobe should complement you.

It should never overpower you.

Do I Need to Feel Confident Before Booking a Boudoir Session?

This may be one of the most important things I can tell you:

No.

Confidence isn’t a requirement for boudoir photography.

Women are often surprised to learn how many of the beautiful, seemingly effortless women they see in boudoir photographs walked into the studio nervous.

Being photographed this intimately can feel vulnerable.

That’s normal.

Creating a comfortable environment, providing direction and allowing you the space to settle into the experience are all part of what I do.

You don’t have to manufacture confidence before you arrive.

Sometimes seeing yourself through a different lens is exactly what allows you to reconnect with it.

What Happens After Your Boudoir Session?

The experience doesn’t end when I put down my camera.

After your session, you’ll return to the studio for your private image reveal.

This is when you finally get to see yourself.

Your finished photographs are presented to you, and together we’ll go through your images and select the ones you love.

From there, your photographs can become beautiful albums, digital image collections and artwork designed to last far beyond the day of your session.

Because while the experience itself can be powerful, the photographs become the part you get to keep.

Years from now, they become a reminder of exactly who you were in this chapter of your life.

So, What Is Boudoir Photography Really About?

Yes, boudoir photography creates beautiful photographs.

But I believe its value reaches far beyond that.

It’s an opportunity to step outside the way you normally see yourself.

To celebrate the body that has carried you through your life.

To reconnect with parts of yourself that may have become buried beneath careers, motherhood, relationships, responsibilities and everything else life asks of women.

And sometimes, it’s simply an opportunity to look at a photograph and think:

There I am.

Not transformed.

Not made into someone else.

Just seen differently.

And that’s exactly why I do what I do.
